My Monthly Anticipation | April 2023

Hello everyone,

Who doesn’t love the anticipation of new releases and things that they plan on doing? Every month there seems to be something new and exciting ready to hit the market for our consumption.

Being ready to embrace them with open arms is all we can really do.

To showcase this, I’ll be sharing my top 3 (or up to 3) for each category of things that I look forward to this month right here, right now!

BOOK RELEASES.

Untethered Sky by Fonda Lee.
Publication date: April 11th, 2023.
Ester’s family was torn apart when a manticore killed her mother and baby brother, leaving her with nothing but her father’s painful silence and a single, overwhelming need to kill the monsters that took her family.
Ester’s path leads her to the King’s Royal Mews, where the giant rocs of legend are flown to hunt manticores by their brave and dedicated ruhkers. Paired with a fledgling roc named Zahra, Ester finds purpose and acclaim by devoting herself to a calling that demands absolute sacrifice and a creature that will never return her love. The terrifying partnership between woman and roc leads Ester not only on the empire’s most dangerous manticore hunt, but on a journey of perseverance and acceptance.

My thoughts: Having quite enjoyed Jade City, I can only imagine that this new novella by Fonda Lee will surely be a solid read!

COMIC BOOK RELEASES.

Issue #1 will be released by Marvel Comics on April 12th, 2023.
WHO ARE THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY? One year ago, the Guardians of the Galaxy were destroyed. Their optimistic future shattered by the betrayal of one of their own. Now they ride the space lanes of a lawless corner of the galaxy, trying to outrun their tragedy. Can they rediscover their heroism and humanity on the bleakest frontier? Can they forgive the failures of their past? Or will they fade into the dark, eternally unforgiven? Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly (CAPTAIN AMERICA: SENTINEL OF LIBERTY) team up with artist Kev Walker (PREDATOR) for a Guardians story like no other!

My thoughts: A fresh start for a new team to tackle the Guardians of the Galaxy, pretty much in time with the upcoming movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Issue #1 will be released by DC Comics on April 11tt, 2023.
The Corinthian has been turned loose on our realm once more, and this time he sets his sights on the very root of rapacious American capitalism—Silicon Valley. His relentless pursuit of the Smiling Man will carve a bloody path from the C-suite of Prophet Capital to the bowels of a demonic nightclub, and no one will be safe from his reach. Not Ken, living large in the Bay Area since parting ways with Barbie all those years ago. Not Max, a nervous hedge fund manager on the rise who’s never quite fit anywhere. Not anyone. Multiple Eisner Award-winning writer James Tynion IV reunites with superstar horror artist Lisandro Estherren to bring you the nightmare-fueled follow-up you’ve been craving, a tale that will plumb the bottomless depths of our yearning for more at the heart of the American dream.

My thoughts: James Tynion IV teaming up with Lisandro Estherren for a new horror story within Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Universe is definitely awesome. I’m curious about this one!

Issue #1 will be released by Marvel Comics on April 26th, 2023.
THE DARK LORD OF THE SITH LIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN HIM BEFORE! Following the successful black, white and red series produced by Marvel Comics, DARTH VADER now takes the spotlight for tales of terror by some of the industries most talented creators! Peach Momoko will spin a story only she can bring to life! PLUS, the return of Jason Aaron to the world of STAR WARS with Part One of his Vader tale spanning all four issues!

My thoughts: This project sounds pretty cool too. It is worrisome that it’s more of an anthology than one self-contained story but the style and direction make it seem worthwhile.

TV SHOW RELEASES.

Premieres on April 6th, 2023.

My thoughts: This sounds like a lot of fun and a lot of mayhem! Original too. 😀

My thoughts: I’m still trying to make time to check out the manga but having heard great things about it, I’m sure the anime adaptation will be solid! For those curious, it’s apparently a cross between Harry Potter and One Punch Man! 😀

MOVIE RELEASES.

Premieres on April 5th, 2023.

My thoughts: One thing’s for sure, the animation is on point! While many have doubts regarding Chris Pratt voicing Mario, everything else looks pretty good!

Premieres on April 5th, 2023.

My thoughts: As a huge basketball fan, this movie just seems like a must-watch, even if it turns out not as mind-blowing as I’d want it to be. The cast is pretty solid too and Ben Affleck has been a pretty good director so far.

Premieres on April 21st, 2023.

My thoughts: This is by far my most anticipated movie this month! Director Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) with Joaquin Phoenix???? I mean, come on, this is a win. I also saw recently the director say that “It’s like a Jewish Lord of the Rings… but he’s just going to his mom’s house” made me want to watch 200% more.

VIDEO GAME RELEASES.

Out on April 19th, 2023.

My thoughts: Having fully enjoyed Horizon Forbidden West (2022), I’m definitely interested in this upcoming downloadable content. Not sure I’ll go pre-order it but will probably wait for a price drop or something to try it out.

Out on April 21st, 2023.

My thoughts: If you’re looking for a new zombie game to pick up, this might be your best bet!

Out on April 28th, 2023.

My thoughts: I have been meaning to play the first game for a while now, especially with all the praise it got. But now knowing the sequel is just around the corner, it might be time to play catch-up before this one is released by the end of the month!

PERSONAL LIFE.

April shouldn’t be too hectic according to my agenda. Besides a couple of anniversaries among friends and family, the month should be quite calm and I’m definitely glad about that. I do look forward to that Easter long weekend though! Those four days of rest are definitely welcome, considering that the last time work was off the menu was during the winter holidays (Christmas/New Year). I also believe we’re getting some ugly weather in the upcoming days, despite things getting warmer. All the more reason to cozy up and read some Tolkien. 😉

Thank you all for checking out my monthly anticipation post!

Now tell me what you’re looking forward to this month! Any new releases? Anything exciting you plan on doing?

Yours truly,

  1. How do you score a 4day weekend out of Easter? I’m pretty jealous of that.

The only thing I’m even remotely interested in will be the Mario Brothers movie. and I can wait until it gets to be free on prime in a year or so 😀

Hope the One Harry Potter Punch doesn’t disappoint 😉

    1. I’ve been meaning to read Jade City forever. Maybe I’ll get to it this year. Her new book sounds pretty exciting. 📙

“It’s like a Jewish Lord of the Rings… but he’s just going to his mom’s house,” that seals the deal for me! 😁

Have a wonderful April. I hope there is a lot of sun and the bad weather passes you by. ☀

  2. I didn’t know there will be a Mario movie, but I guess that explains why the decorated a metro station with a Mario theme ahah! I’m also looking forward to the Easter long weekend and to a better weather (hopefully)!

  3. I am exited for Dead Island 2, its been ages, I ended up finishing Riptide last year as the first game I installed when I got the gaming laptop. I just hope they cut down on all the fetch quests, it got boring with the first two, it also got boring with Dying Light, seeing as the same company published that game. I do like the setting tho, so will def take it for a spin.

      1. I have not finished Dying light 1 yet as my pc crashed and im in the process of fixing. Might be looking at getting both on the PS maybe, just going through some bigger games at the moment.

  4. Lashaan, as a newly-minted, big fan of The Sandman, the Sandman Universe comic caught my eye. I didn’t know about the existence of this line of comics Gaiman blessed, and now I am wondering if you’ve read any of the others that have been published? Would you recommend?

    1. I’ve got many volumes by different writers and artists that belong to these new stories within the Sandman Universe but haven’t gotten around to them. I’ll have to plan some sort of month for it all (after all my Tolkien frenzy) before I could give you my honest thoughts on them, Bruce! 😀 For now, I can only highly recommend Gaiman’s original run (which I still need to finish up too).

  5. The Fallen Order was super cool! This one looks impressive too, can’t wait to jump back into this world 😀 this is what SW series should look like, not that debatable stuff Disney’s serving 😉 Happy April, Lashaan!

  6. Looks like you have plenty to look forward to here.
I’m curious about the Sandman graphic novels after watching the Netflix series recently and enjoying it. Have never tried a graphic novel before though so not sure whether they’re for me or not.
Have a great April, Lashaan 😀

  7. I really like that cover for Untethered Sky. That alone could get me to read the book. Glad to hear you may have a relaxing April. I hope it goes very well for you, Lashaan!

    1. It’s lovely, isn’t it? I look forward to seeing what the cover art will be for the rest of the series too. Beef seems like such an original concept. I hope they got a good story to back it up. Yep, lots of high expectations from gamers for the new SW game sequel. Hope you have a great month of April, Greg. Take care! 🙂

  8. I’ve heard a lot about Fonda Lee, but never read any books – though that cover for Untethered Sky is amazing and I love the look of Beau Is Afraid, which seems quite tempting. Thank you for sharing and I hope April is a good viewing and reading month – and you get a chance to put your feet up during your Easter break, Lashaan:)).

  9. I haven’t played much of Jedi: Fallen Order – it’s on my backlog – but based on what I have played, it’s probably a fairly good game. Still working through Hogwarts Legacy and God Of War Ragnorok.

  10. Hope you’ve managed to relax a bit in April so far and have enjoyed the long Easter weekend. Did you manage to read some books? Here in the UK we had a couple of days with lovely weather and one day with torrential rain, which was the worst we’ve had for ages.

    1. For sure, stargazer! It would be a terrifying thought of not being able to read when I’ve got an upcoming long weekend. 😛 We also had a terrifying ice storm last week which followed up with some of the most amazing warm weather! Mother Nature sure didn’t know what to do with us lately. 😀
