My Monthly Anticipation | July 2021

Hello ladies & gentlemen,

Who doesn’t love the anticipation of new releases and things that they plan on doing? Every month there seems to be something new and exciting ready to hit the market for our consumption.

Being ready to embrace them with open arms is all we can really do.

To showcase this, I’ll be sharing my top 3 for each category of things that I look forward to this month right here, right now!

The Fall of Koli by M.R. Carey;
Release Date: March 23rd 2021.
The Fall of Koli is the third and final novel in the breathtakingly original Rampart trilogy – set in a strange and deadly world of our own making. The world that is lost will come back to haunt us . . . Koli has come a long way since being exiled from his small village of Mythen Rood. In his search for the fabled tech of the old times, he knew he’d be battling strange, terrible beasts and trees that move as fast as whips. But he has already encountered so much more than he bargained for. Now that Koli and his companions have found the source of the signal they’ve been following – the mysterious “Sword of Albion” – there is hope that their perilous journey will finally be worth something. Until they unearth terrifying truths about an ancient war . . . and realise that it may have never ended.

I’m working my way through this one right now and I’m really curious to see how M.R. Carey plans to shock us with Koli’s great secret/lie!

A Games of Thrones by George R.R. Martin;
Release Date: August 6th 1996.
Winter is coming, and in the frozen wastes to the North, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a region of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale rife with plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, as each faction endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

I’ve been slacking on my review of this one for a while now but I’m persuaded I’ll get that done this month!

A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers;
Release Date: July 13th, 2021.
It’s been centuries since the robots of Earth gained self-awareness and laid down their tools.
Centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again.
Centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of “what do people need?” is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.
They’re going to need to ask it a lot.

I haven’t read anything else by Becky Chambers but we all know about her Wayfarers series! Maybe this will convince me to push that series to the top of my TBR! 😛

The Freedom Race by Lucinda Roy;
Release Date: July 13th, 2021.
In the aftermath of a cataclysmic civil war known as the Sequel, ideological divisions among the states have hardened. In the Homestead Territories, an alliance of plantation-inspired holdings, Black labor is imported from the Cradle, and Biracial “Muleseeds” are bred. Raised in captivity on Planting 437, kitchen-seed Jellybean “Ji-ji” Lottermule knows there is only one way fto escape. She must enter the annual Freedom Race as a runner. Ji-ji and her friends must exhume a survival story rooted in the collective memory of a kidnapped people and conjure the voices of the dead to light their way home.

It’s been a while since I’ve read speculative fiction but this one does sound promising with some very timely subject matters!

The Past is Red by Catherynne M. Valente;
Release Date: July 20th, 2021.
The future is blue. Endless blue…except for a few small places that float across the hot, drowned world left behind by long-gone fossil fuel-guzzlers. One of those patches is a magical place called Garbagetown.
Tetley Abednego is the most beloved girl in Garbagetown, but she’s the only one who knows it. She’s the only one who knows a lot of things: that Garbagetown is the most wonderful place in the world, that it’s full of hope, that you can love someone and 66% hate them all at the same time.
But Earth is a terrible mess, hope is a fragile thing, and a lot of people are very angry with her. Then Tetley discovers a new friend, a terrible secret, and more to her world than she ever expected.

I’ve been dying to read Deathless by this author for years now and never got around to it. Time to finally discover her writing style in this new novella!

Issue #1 of X-Men comes out on July 7th 2021 over at Marvel.
THESE X-MEN ARE…FEARLESS! The heroes of Krakoa are here to save the planet! Things might be complicated between the nation of Krakoa and the rest of the world, but to the X-MEN, things are simple—you do what’s right, you protect those who need protecting and you save the world we all share. Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Sunfire, Rogue, Wolverine, Synch and Polaris are the chosen champions of mutantkind, and they will not shrink from any battle for their home planet. Writer Gerry Duggan (MARAUDERSDEADPOOLUNCANNY AVENGERS) reteams with superstar artist Pepe Larraz (HOUSE OF XX OF SWORDSPLANET-SIZE X-MEN) to chart the course of the X-Men in a world of the Reign of X!

I’ve tried following the X-Men’s last Krakoa adventures with its gazillion different series but the quality started to wane. Maybe this new creative team can give this series its much-needed spark?

Issue #1 of Sinister War comes out on July 14th 2021 over at Marvel.
DOCTOR OCTOPUS IS BACK! AND THE SINISTER WAR HAS BEGUN! Ock’s got a new Sinister Six and if you think he’s thought big in the past, think again. What Ock DOESN’T know is that the VULTURE has a sextet of his own: THE SAVAGE SIX! It’s an all-out WAR between two of the greatest villains in the Marvel Universe, and the only person they hate more than each other is SPIDER-MAN! Spidey’s in deep trouble with the toughest battle that he’s ever faced. Nick Spencer and Mark Bagley team up for this epic Spider-Man story guaranteed to shock readers everywhere!

A Spidey event like none other. Two villains creating their own Sinister Six? Talk about war! This sounds fun. 😛

Issue #1 of Moon Knight comes out on July 21st 2021 over at Marvel.
I AM MOON KNIGHT! The mysterious Mr. Knight has opened his Midnight Mission, his people petitioning for protection from the weird and horrible. The Moon Knight stalks the rooftops and alleys marked with his crescent moon tag, bringing violence to any who would harm his people. Marc Spector, in whichever guise he dons, is back on the streets, a renegade priest of an unworthy god. But while Khonshu languishes in a prison that Moon Knight put him in, Moon Knight must still observe his duty: protecting those who travel at night. Let it be known—Moon Knight will keep the faith.

Just in time for the upcoming Moon Knight Disney+ series that should drop anytime soon, this latest series is definitely on my TBR. The past series have been quite fascinating and I’m definitely intrigued by the lunatic hero now!

The first episode of season 1 premieres on Disney+ on July 7th 2021.

I haven’t even seen the sequels to Monsters Inc. yet but it will now get a series on Disney+! Fans must be surely excited for this one!

The first episode of season 1 premieres on Disney+ on June 11th 2021.

I have heard about Masters of the Universe all my life and as a 90s kid, I probably missed the hype train from the 80s for it but here it is now with a new series!

Out on July 2nd 2021.

Netflix’s three-part movie series with classic horror story vibes might be a huge winner for fans of the genre!

Out on July 9th 2021.

It has been months since this MCU movie was supposed to release but the wait is now over! Only a couple more days before we get Black Widow back in action (one last time?).

Out on July 16th 2021.

I’m a huge fan of the original Space Jam movie as a basket-ball fan. It’s not a perfect movie but still a huge cult classic. Time to see if this sequel can be its own thing or fail under the pressure of its predecessor!

Having gotten through the funeral now, July should be a calmer month going further. I do have to mention that, even though I wasn’t close with my grand-mother, witnessing the traditional ceremony and watch my mom, uncle, and aunts go through the emotionally-heavy moments did make me realize how precious life is, how death can affect us all, and how much you want to say to the people you love before it’s too late. If you never took a moment to realize it yourself, I invite you to do so. You never know what life has in store for us at any instance.

With that being said, July does look somewhat decent but I know I still have a lot of things that I need to get done. Notably, I have another essay to write before mid-July, similar to the one I had to finish up at the end of June. On top of that, my pseudo-vacation period (which I’m currently on) comes to an end Tuesday, so getting used to working fives times a week will require some time. I forgot how being on vacation always makes you wish the vacation was extended… 😛

I do hope to get back to a good routine of reading and blogging soon though. I feel like if I don’t do it now, summer will come to an end before I even know it hahah! Here’s hoping July will prove to be a solid, productive month. 😀

  1. Oh man, they’re going to ruin He-Man?!? Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!???????????/

    I haven’t seen Monster U either, so I don’t think I’ll be into the tv show very much.

    Good luck getting back to a regular work routine. That’s always a toughie….

    1. Hahahaha hey man, maybe it’ll turn out to be much better than anyone ever expected it to be. You’ll just have to try it out for yourself to find out. 😛

      I’ll probably only try Monster U at some point but the TV show is no priority of mine.

      Thanks, man. I do hope work doesn’t turn out as shitty as it has been lately and that you get to make the most of July too. Stay safe, good sir.

  2. OMG, He-Man comes back??? I feel like they’ve run out of good ideas to reboot… a very long time ago. I must admit I did watch and enjoy He-Man as a very small kid but I am not at all interested in revisiting this experience 😉 To be fair, the whole idea of rebooting is itself rather questionable… 🤣🤣🤣

    This Spidey storyline sounds intriguing!

    Good luck with finding your work-life balance in July, Lashaan!

  3. I’m so.. conflicted that they’ve made a new space jam. Idk- seemed to be one of the memorable thing of it’s era, and it feels kind of odd to me (sortof like the new jumaji was!) but again, I haven’t been particularly attached to either xd the concept of having another one more recent is just… off I guess.

    Only thing im looking forward this month, is hopefully following 4-days work (instead of 5- and NOT being called in when off) aswell as my last covid shot on the 12th!
    Happy July xx

    1. I totally understand that! I felt the same about Jumanji, despite all the hype and love it gets from younger people. Space Jam, the original, was just so iconic, a true cult classic. I just hope Lebron doesn’t cheese it too much!

      That’s wonderful! I hope you have a wonderful month of July and that you get to do everything you want as well. Stay safe! 😀

  4. I almost can’t believe they’re bringing He-Man back. Well, actually I guess it’s not that surprising. Everything seems to get brought back eventually. I did enjoy He-Man as a kid. Not sure I’d watch now, but who knows, maybe. And the X-Men appear to have gone in directions I’m completely unfamiliar with. Not only do some of them look a bit different than I remember, but I’m not familiar with the nation of Krakoa. I wish you well this month, Lashaan. I hope things slow down enough to let you enjoy a bit of it, and that you don’t have any other major hardships to work through.

    1. I’m not surprised that He-Man is back too. Everything in the 80s-90s usually is bound to get revived 30-40 years later hahaha I don’t think I’ll watch it though; I’m more inclined to check out movies than shows for the past years now.

      Yep, the whole nation of Krakoa is a new storyline, an interesting one but it sort of got diluted in the number of sub-series it spawned, at least for me. But I find that such things are inevitable with the X-Men. There are just sooooo many characters that it’s impossible that one series covers all of them with enough depth.

      Thanks, man. I hope July has been great so far for you too, my friend! Stay safe and enjoy the beautiful weather on everyone’s behalf! 😀

  5. Oh man He-Man!? I wasn’t into it the first time, so I doubt I’ll be watching it this time around. Monsters though and Space Jam look fab. I’m conflicted about Black Widow as I love her in the Avengers and really hope they don’t ruin it with a film full of stunts and no story. :/ Hope July goes really well for you Lashaan! 😀

    1. Hahahah I never grew up watching He-Man but I do hope fans will enjoy this latest series! I fear the exact same thing about Black Widow. It’s why I have yet to check it out even though it came out yesterday hahaha Have a fantastic month of July, Nicki! 😀

  6. An eclectic choice, but one item made me stop and think for a while: the book about the monk and the robot. I was just thinking that if this robot goes around asking what people need, he’ll get a lot of answers about what people want. Which is not necessarily the same thing.

  7. Seeing Space Jam makes me laugh because I remember selling Warner Bros. the furniture for their production offices for the first movie WAY back when, lol. God I’ve been in the furniture business way too long! Hope you have a good month, Lashaan😁

    1. Oh my goodness, that is too cool!!! I grew up watching the movie, first for the Looney Tunes characters and then for the basketball references hahah I do hope they don’t butcher the original’s reputation with this sequel. 😛 Have an excellent month of July, Tammy! 😀

  8. I still haven’t found it in me to even attempt to pick up Game of Thrones again. I just don’t think the series is for me. Just need to know what to do with the set now 🤣
    I feel like I’m one of the few that isn’t all that hyped for the black widow movie. It’s not that I don’t like the character, but I just feel like we’ve already closed the chapter on her legacy.
    I’m sorry to hear about your grandmother’s passing. Hopefully, now that the funerals passed the family can focus on the fond memories they had of her.
    Good luck with the essay. I’m sure you’ll smash it!

    1. Oh nooo hahaha I’ve only heard people being intimidated by its size more than anything but I guess some stories are just not meant for some people too! 😛 Maybe you have family members who won’t mind getting that set for Christmas from you then! 😛

      Rest assured, I’m not that hyped for Black Widow too. That story should’ve been told before her death. And I’m not convinced that they have that great of a story to tell with her either hahahah More excited by the next MCU movies though. 😀

      Thank you so much for your kind words, Lois! Take care and stay safe as well! 😀

  9. Game of Thrones is firmly on my TBR list, though I haven’t started the series yet. That’s one thing I’m hoping to do in the second half of 2021.

  10. I am so sorry to hear about your grand-mother. Agree that it’s a reminder to tell people you love them while there is still time AND also remember to live the life you want to now and not postpone all the things you really want to do.

    Hope you had a nice vacation. I have vacation coming up soon, but opposite yours, mine is a real one not a pseudo. What is a pseudo vacation anyway? 😊

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks for your kind words! Hahaha they were “pseudo-vacation” because I was off work but I dedicated that time to work on my Ph.D.-related essays. So… not really vacations. 😛 I look forward to the day I can actually disconnect from everything and just enjoy a trip again. It’ll probably be for summer 2022. That way I’ll also have the world time to get used to a post-pandemic era. 😛 I hope you enjoy your vacation time though!

      1. Good luck with your PhD! I remember working full time (more than full time) whilst writing my masters thesis and in the end it was an absolute nightmare and I couldn’t wait to finish my studies, so I could focus on my job without constantly feeling bad about not studying.
