My Monthly Anticipation | June 2021

Hello ladies & gentlemen,

Who doesn’t love the anticipation of new releases and things that they plan on doing? Every month there seems to be something new and exciting ready to hit the market for our consumption.

Being ready to embrace them with open arms is all we can really do.

To showcase this, I’ll be sharing my top 3 for each category of things that I look forward to this month right here, right now!

TO BE READ.

26118426. sy475
Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee;
Release Date: June 14th 2016.

I’m not changing anything to my June TBR just so I can finish up what I’ve already started. Really looking forward to how this one turns out!

52694527. sy475
The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne;
Release Date: May 6th 2021.

I’m deep into this one and I’m quite impressed by how John Gwynne handles his world-building here. It is indeed even more impressive than anything I’ve read by him so far.

55077697
The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman;
Release date: May 25th 2021.

Almost done with this one and I’m glad to that it meets my expectations quite perfectly! More on this soon!

BOOK RELEASES.

53968532
The Ninth Metal by Benjamin Percy;
Release Date: June 1st 2021.

I know someone who is a huge fan of Benjamin Percy (wink wink) and I’m curious about his latest novel. Having only known him for his comics, it really got me curious as to what he can achieve with books!

55400772
The Coward by Stephen Aryan;
Release Date: June 8th 2021.

I’ve been seeing this one around a lot and it sounds quite fun! And the cover is pretty. 😉

42291958. sy475
Play of Shadows by Sebastien de Castell;
Release Date: June 24th 2021.

I don’t know how many times I told myself I’d try his Greatcoats series and I still haven’t. His latest novel sounds just as good though and now I have to wonder what book should be my first by him.

COMIC BOOK RELEASES.

Issue #1 of Heroes Reborn comes out on May 5th 2021 over at Marvel.

Writer Tom King showcased a pretty decent understanding of Superman whenever he has had the chance to play with the character before and now it’s time for him to try things out with Supergirl. Who knows where this will go.

I dedicated last month to reading through all four volumes of writer Mark Millar’s Jupiter’s Legacy just to see if the Netflix adaptation would be worth checking out… While decent, the fact that they now cancelled the show after 1 season has me less enthused to try it out. I am, however, curious about this new story arc after so many years!

How exactly do you say no to a Batman story by writer Garth Ennis? And a story about some sort of creature that goes after villains? I’m all in.

TV SHOW RELEASES.

The first episode of season 1 premieres on Netflix on June 4th 2021.

Remember when I dedicated one of my Digital Mini Reviews post to the whole Sweet Tooth series by writer Jeff Lemire? Well, here’s DC surprising us with a TV series adaptation of the comics! It looks aesthetically amazing. It remains to be seen if they’ll stick to the comics or not.

The first episode of season 1 premieres on Disney+ on June 11th 2021.

The wait is over. After WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it’s time for Loki’s Disney+ mini-series to take over social media!

The first episode of season 2 premieres on Netflix on June 11th 2021.

Having seen season 1, I can safely say that this show is pretty entertaining, despite being a bit predictable. I am curious to see what they have in store for season 2 though.

MOVIE RELEASES.

Out on June 4th 2021.

I’ve watched The Conjuring movies so far so I can tell you that I’m most likely going to check this one out just for the heck of it but I definitely won’t rush to do so.

Out on June 11th 2021.

How does anyone even say no to a Disney/Pixar movie nowadays? Let’s see what they’ll make us feel this time around.

Out on June 25th 2021.

The clearly over-the-top franchise continues to expand with their 9th installment and, at this point, I’m just watching these to see how much more ludicrous it can get. 😉

PERSONAL LIFE.

I’d love to say that June is going to be peaceful and all but I think it’ll be best if I don’t lie to myself already. June is going to be beyond hectic and I’m already looking forward to July. Time management is going to be my number one issue here and it’s going to be challenge to keep everything afloat until the end of the month.

Halfway into the month, I need to go on a “business trip” (drive 6 hours further north of the province) for a week of training (mostly police officers who are going to be doing that) and that week alone is probably going to keep me quite busy! I do look forward to the experience though, so that keeps me thrilled.

Right after that week, I fall into my “vacation” period but it’ll mostly be overshadowed by writing sessions that need to be done so that I can hand in a couple of university assignments by the end of the month. Since they are still work “vacations”, I will definitely maintain a healthy lifestyle and do the things I want to do just so that I don’t come back to work completely burned out! 😛

At least the cool thing about June is that the province will be progressively re-opening pretty much everything as of June 7th and life will slowly get back to its usual self! That means more activities for us! And more time management issues to handle, especially now that I’ll finally be able to put back hitting the gym into my schedule! 😀

June is going to be wild. 😉

  1. Your June would really be wild!! But you have a lot of things to look forward for!
    And you mentioned a lot of amazing books!! I have just finished The Coward and I have really enjoyed it! And I am a fan of The Greatcoats series 😍 while I have Ninefox Gambit, The Blacktongue Thief and The Shadows of the Gods on my TBR. And, obviously, I am looking forward to all three of them!

  2. Yikes. Your June is wilder than mine. Ah well I am trying to find my mental balance which was so lost in the second wave of the pandemic. Hoping for a few stable months. Have a great month even with this hectic a schedule

  3. One of these days I will have to add The Blacktongue Thief to my TBR because I’ve read enthusiastic reviews about it, and having already sampled the author’s horror stories I’m certain I will enjoy his “trip” into fantasy as well. And I need to FINALLY pick up Ninefox Gambit because it’s been sitting in total neglect for far too long. Bad, bad bookworm!! 😀 😀

  4. I got to watch the pilot episode of Sweet Tooth in a special premiere screening yesterday (wohooo for Netflix letting me get early access) and it was really cute and sad and I think I’ll enjoy the rest of the show. I didn’t, however, read the comics it’s based on.
    Other than that, I’m just beyond pumped for Loki!!!
    Hope your wild June will turn out to be great!!

    1. I don’t even know how people get those special premiere screenings! Really glad that you got it for Sweet Tooth. I’m convinced they’ll achieve something quite wonderful with the first season at least. Just a couple more hours before Loki premieres!!! 😀 Have a wonderful month of June, Kat!

      1. I ended up really enjoying the whole season of Sweet Tooth. In their final trailer they released, there was a website to visit specifically for the show at the end and that’s where you could sign up for the screening haha it really wasn’t that exclusive, I think.
        I’M SITTING ON NEEDLES FOR LOKI TO FINALLY START! For me it’s less than two hours right now.

  5. Woot woot what a crazy month this is gonna be for you, my friend! And so many good books to look forward too! Hats off to you for being able to manage all these and even squeeze in time for gym! *APplause* All the best to you, Lashaan! Have you gotten your vaccination yet, btw? So glad that things are gradually turning back to almost-normal over there 🙂

  6. All 3 of your to be read books are ones I’d love to read, and hope to one day. I hope you enjoy the training week, and all the other weeks for that matter. 🙂 It’s nice when we can have that feeling of being productively busy without getting overwhelmed. I hope you find a balance that works perfectly for you this month, Lashaan, and look forward to hearing how it went come the end of the month.

  7. Lol! I intend to watch the new Fast & Furious movie for the same reason.
    And I want to watch the new Conjuring movie, but I’m trying to find someone to watch it with first. I love horror but possession movies and such really scare me. Laughter helps, so it’s better to watch with someone and laugh about being scared.
    Hope you’re able to juggle all the things in June/July.

    1. I’d have a tough time imagining anyone thinking the new F&F movies represent street racing today hahaha I just remember telling myself that I couldn’t wait for them to go on the moon with their cars next. Looks like they’ll achieve something close enough. 😛
      Hahahaha I have a friend who giggles really loudly when we go watch horror movies. It just does make it so much more hilarious in the end!
      Hope you’re having an excellent month of June so far yourself! 😀

  8. Good luck for this month (which is already half gone), Lashaan! It’s great because your monthly anticipation is basically where I learn that new series or movies are going to be out ahah 😁

  9. If you read different things at the same time, how do you decided when to put one down and pick up the next?

    Vacation? That’s awesome! I hope you had time to rest and do some of the things you haven’t been able to do in a while.

    The movie releases definitely seem intriguing to me. It could go either way…

    1. The way I read books is a bit more… robotic. I have a quota to reach every day (number of pages) of each book until “review day”. It helps create a routine and makes it more certain that I actually finish books too. I rarely ever go beyond the quota because of how many other things I also do. 😛 But when it comes to comics, I guess it often depends on the format and my mood. 😀

      The work trip was quite reinvigorating in its own way, taking me out of my city routine to refocus myself. But I haven’t had a real vacation in a while… At least pre-pandemic… 😛
